Dust Mites

Dust Mites

Your house may contain thousands of microscopic insects like dust mites. Many people are allergic to the waste products and decomposed bodies of these mites. Your mattress alone may contain 200,000 of these mites. The mite lives in mattresses, pillows, carpeting, blankets, and anywhere dust collects. They feed on the scales of the skin we shed.

The waste products get deep into the carpeting and stick tightly to the fibers. They cannot be removed by ordinary vacuuming or shampooing.

What to Do To Control Dust Mites

  • Encase mattresses, box springs, and pillows in zippered dust proof covers.

  • Remove carpets especially in the bedroom if possible.

  • Avoid heavy curtains and blinds. Use light washable curtains.

  • Subsitute wooden, leather, or plastic furniture for upholstered furniture.

  • Wash blankets in hot water every two weeks. Avoid wool or down blankets.

  • Cover air vents with filters or use an electric radiator.

  • Remove stuffed animals or boxes collecting dust from the bedroom.

  • Keep the relative humidity at 35% - 40%. Humidistat gauges are available to measure the humidity.

  • Keep all closet doors shut.

  • Air conditioners with filters can prevent the humidity getting over 50%. Higher humidity stimulates the growth of mites.

  • Use a dehumidifier in the basement if it is damp.
